Specialist Publisher: Making 50 Years of Expertise Searchable

A legal specialist publisher with 80 employees has published commentaries, journals, handbooks, and databases for lawyers, judges, and jurists for 50 years. The digital archive contains over 400,000 documents. The publisher operates its own legal database with 30,000 subscribers.

The problem: keyword search is inadequate for legal questions. Lawyers don’t search for terms — they search for legal questions, lines of precedent, and chains of argument. Finding relevant passages in this archive manually is enormous work — and ties up editors who should be producing new content.

The archive is the publisher’s core business — it must never be fed into external AI systems that might learn from the content and make it available to third parties. Full control was non-negotiable.

Semantic Archive Search with SoverIQ

SoverIQ Stack runs on the publisher’s own server. The archive is indexed locally. Two use cases run in parallel:

For subscribers (product feature): Legal questions are answered semantically: “Which commentary literature addresses liability for autonomous vehicles under §823 BGB?” The system returns relevant passages from the archive — as a premium feature of the database.

For editors (internal): When producing new commentaries or articles, the system automatically checks whether the topic has been addressed before, which sources are relevant, and where contradictions exist in existing commentary.

Results

Subscribers use semantic search 3× more often than the previous keyword search. Subscriber churn fell by 18% — because the value of the database increased tangibly. Editors save 4 hours per article during the research phase.
